Total hospital bed capacity is highly concentrated in the two largest urban centers, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Ho Chi Minh City ranks first with 36,987 beds, followed closely by Hanoi with 36,291 beds. Each city accounts for around 11% of total hospital beds nationwide, meaning that together they represent more than one-fifth of the country’s total capacity. After these two major cities, the gap becomes much wider. Thanh Hoa and Nghe An rank next, with 14,619 and 14,239 beds respectively, each accounting for about 4% of the national total.

By ownership type, an interesting contrast appears between public and non-public hospital beds. Hanoi records the largest number of public beds, accounting for 11% of total public beds nationwide, reflecting its role as the main centre for large public and centrally managed hospitals. However, in the non-public sector, Ho Chi Minh City leads clearly, accounting for around 19% of total non-public beds nationwide. This indicates that Ho Chi Minh City has a stronger concentration of private and international hospital models, supported by higher demand for specialised, premium, and market-oriented healthcare services.
