The quantity of foreigners' visits in Vietnam (first 5 months of 2014)

In 2013, the quantity if foreigners’ visits reached 7.5 millions. Among those, 61.3%  came on the purpose of tourism. In the first 5 months of 2014, the visit number was over 3.7 millions, increasing by 26.1% in comparision with the same period last year.  In terms of origin, three countries paid the most number of visits in Vietnam were from Asia. China ranked first with 25% visits in 2013. Moreover, the number of visits from China in the first 5 months of 2014 is nearly 1 million (grows by 43.4% in comparison with the same period last year). In general, the numbers of visits from most countries increase from 4/2014 to 5/2014. This is a good sign for hospitality and tourism industry.

Export value in Ho Chi Minh by type of ownership (May, 2014)

In May 2014, Ho Chi Minh City exported a value of USD 1,835.5 million, divided equally into foreign investment sector and domestic sector. In the latter sector, non-state business exported USD 746.7 million, accounting for 41% of the city’s export value. Despite the limited share of only 10%, state sector’s export value grew by 70% in one month.
Although there was a little decrease in export value in comparison with April, in the first 5 months of 2014, the export value showed a slight increase when comparing with the same period last year (by 5.7%). Specially, again, state sector’ export showed the surge in value, by 60%.

Main Import Products (2013-5/2014)

In 2013, the import value of Vietnam reached 131,312 million USD, increasing by 15% in comparision with 2012. Machinery tools and spare parts and Electronics, computers and accessories were imported most in 2013 with 14% and 13%, respectively, of total value. Besides, Telephones of all kinds  and accessories showed the fastest growth in value at about 60% year on year. By contrast, there was an drop in the value of imported motorbike and Means of transport and spare parts (by about 30%). In the first 5 months of 2014, Vietnam imported the amount of 56,859 milion USD, increasing by about 10% in comparision with the same period last year. The biggest amount was still spent for Machinery tools and spare parts and Electronics, computers and accessories. However, seafood and wood and materials imported value rose at a highest rate (about 90%).

GDP of Ho Chi Minh city in first 6 months of 2014

GDP of Ho Chi Minh city in the first 6 months this year is estimated at about 378.915 billion VND ( at current price), it has risen 8.2% compared with the same period in 2013 which was 7.9% and 8.1% in 2013 and 1012 respectively.
In aforementioned 8.2%, commerce & service accounted for 5.54% and those of  industry & construction and agriculture, forestry & fisheries were 2.64% and 0.05% respectively.
– GDP at current price of agriculture, forestry & fisheries  was 3.250 billion VND, taking up 0.9% of GDP and has gained 6% increase. Meanwhile, agricultural production value reached 4106.8 billion VND (at current price), which made it rise 4.1% compared with the same period last year; planting took up 34.2%, 4% increase; cattle breeding accounted for 56.3%, 4 increase. Production value of forestry was estimated to be 96.6 billion VND (at current price), increasing 54.6% compared with the same period last year, in which mining activities increased 68.9%. Fisheries’ value reached 2116.3 billion VND (at current price), rising 9.1 compared with same period last year.  In fisheries, aquaculture value was 1563.3 billion VND , 14.9% increase; fisheries exploitation was 534.5 billion VND, 6.4% fall.
-At current price, GDP of industry & construction reached 150,652 billion VND, accounting for 39.8% of GDP, 6.4 increase. Specifically, industry took up 35.3%, increasing 6.6%; construction ‘s proportion was 4.4%, increasing 5.1%. Generally speaking, industrial production indicator rose 5.6% compared to the same period last year. Further specifically, there was a slight change in mining industry (0.4%); processing industry increased 5.6%; electricity production & distribution rose 5.7%; water supply and garbage processing increased 7.2%.
-In commerce & service, GDP at current price reach 225,013 billion VND, accounting for 59.4% of total GDP, increasing 9.6%. Specifically,  increase rates of business, hotel & restaurants and logistic & storage were 11.1%, 10.8% and 12.6% respectively.

Situation of trade between Vietnam and Japan in 2013

Vietnam export value to Japan increased continously from 2009-2013 with CAGR of 21.4%. Import value from Japan increased in three years 2009-2011, however, since 2012, the figure stucked at 11.6 billion USD. Before 2011, the trade balance Vietnam-Japan was deficit but since 2011 the positive numbers has appeared. In 2013, trade balance reached +2. In that year, the major imported goods from Japan were machines, equipment, tools and spares (25.5%). On the other hand, textiles and crude oil accounted for the most in export value.

Number of sport medals of international competition (2002-2012)

 From 2002 to 2012, Vietnam gained sport medals each year of all types (gold, silver and bronze) and three scales (South East Asia, Asia and the world). In general, although there were some decreases in 2006 and 2008, the number of medals increased throughout the years. The majority of sport medals that Vietnam achieved came from South East Asia competitions. In 2012, Vietnam achieved 322 gold medals, 277 silver ones and 237 bronze ones. Among the number of gold medals, more than half of them were from South East Asia competitions; 36% came from Asia competitions; and the rest came from international sport competitions (28 medals).

Change of area of water surface 2005 – 2012

According to data from General Statistics Office, from 2005 to 2012, the whole country’s aquacultural land rose from 952.6 thousand ha to1038.9 thousand ha (increase 9.06%). Mekong River delta stands the first place with 727.2 thousand ha, accounts for 70% of the whole country. Ca Mau province, Kien Giang province and Bac Lieu province are 3 top largest aquacultural land of Vietnam.

Telephone market in Vietnam 2009 – 2012

From 2008 to 2012, it can be seen that there was a surge in mobile phone. Number of 2G mobile phone subscribers in 2012 was nearly 116 million people, about 1.5 times as many as that in 2009. Similarly, 3G mobile phone rose from 7 million subscribers to more than 15 million subscribers, 2.2 times although it was not until 2009 that 3G mobile phone came to exist. In contrast with mobile phone, fewer and fewer subscribe fixed-line telephone day by day. 2009 was the peak year of fixed-line telephone when there were nearly 17.5 million subscribers. However, it then experienced such drastic decrease to 9.5 million subscribers in 2012.

Number of markets by class and by province (2008-2012)

In 2012, Vietnam had 8,547 markets. Most of them are Class 3 markets (capacity of fewer than 200 stalls). Although accounting for the least part in number, Class 1 markets (capacity of more than 400 stalls) increased gradually in quantity from 2008 to 2012. In Vietnam, North Central and Central coastal areas took up the most markets in Vietnam (28.8%). Located in this area, Thanh Hoa came first in number of markets with 455 ones in 2012 (grew by 12% in comparision with 2011).

Retail sales of goods and services 2012

In 2012, retaill sales of goods and services increased 16% higher than 2011. FDI sectoand private sector with growth of 34% and 20.8% respectively stood out from the others. However, there was a slight decrease  (1.2%) in state-owned economy sector. On the other hands, in regards of types of economic activity, all industries grew positively in which tourism throve the most with growth of 28.1%. Despite having less growth (15.2%), commerce still took the largest proportion with 77.1% of total value.
